Technológia virtuálnej reality (VR) robí vlny v rôznych odvetviach, od hier a zábavy až po vzdelávanie a zdravotníctvo.  Zatiaľ čo pohlcujúce zážitky, ktoré ponúka, sú nepopierateľne pôsobivé, environmentálne výhody virtuálnej reality sú často prehliadané. Každých pár rokov špičkoví svetoví vedci prichádzajú so stovkami rôznych scenárov, pričom všetky sú zamerané na obmedzenie globálneho otepľovania na 2 stupne Celzia (3,6 stupňa Fahrenheita) v porovnaní s predindustriálnymi úrovňami. Všetky úspešné plány si vyžadujú vážne zníženie emisií – nie je to prekvapujúce, pretože ľudia za posledné tri storočia vypustili do atmosféry viac ako 1,7 bilióna metrických ton CO2. Mnohé z týchto plánov však vyžadujú aj niečo iné: vysávanie uhlíka z atmosféry. Výzvou je, že nikto sa nemôže dohodnúť na tom, ako to najlepšie urobiť. TikTok produces the same CO2 emissions as an intercontinental flight

People often underestimate the impact of social media scrolling on their carbon footprint because other things tend to get more attention. But how much does it affect our personal emissions? According to the study, the most polluting app is TikTok, which, despite having only a third of Facebook's user base, produces more CO2 than any other competitor. They have a solid 30% lead over rival Reddit in per capita emissions with 30.72 kg of CO2 per user per year. For comparison, this equates to 0.38 % of the average carbon emissions of a Chinese citizen in 2021, which is slightly more than a flight from Beijing to Tianjin. If you scrolled through TikTok every day for as long as the average user does (32 minutes a day) for your entire life, you would generate slightly more carbon emissions than flying from Beijing to Malta.
