Local pilot projects to reduce energy poverty and fuelwood consumption

Within the LIFE BIO-BALANCE project, four local pilot projects were implemented – in three countries: Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania – to test small-scale practical interventions that best match the identified needs of people dependent on fuelwood in low-income communities.

The three Habitat for Humanity (HfH) national offices managed the implementation in each location with local governments, community organizers and coordinators. HfH Hungary developed two guidelines on pilot projects based on experience:

  • Guide Local pilot projects to reduce energy poverty and use of firewood summarizes local pilot projects, best practices that emerged from their implementation, lessons learned during the process, as well as recommendations for replicability;
  • Locally pilot projects: Capacity building and multi-stakeholder planning guide describes the steps and stakeholders of the implementation and involvement of the target group in the context of local capacity building.
