Concrete forms the backbone of the most impressive structures of human civilization. The ancient Romans built aqueducts with it. We use it for modern highways. This versatile material builds our cities, roads and bridges. It enables social progress and urban development. After water, concrete is the second most consumed material in the world.
But the production of concrete has a big disadvantage. It contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. The cement industry accounts for about 8 % of the world's CO2 emissions. This fact points to the need for innovative solutions. (Eric Ralls, more at earth.com)
