What is COP?

COP, which stands for Conference of the Parties, is a series of formal Conference of the Parties meetings where governments assess global efforts to make progress on the Paris Agreement and the Convention, as well as to limit global warming to 1.5°C, as indicated by the latest scientific evidence knowledge. At the COP, world leaders meet to measure progress and negotiate the best ways to tackle climate change.

Currently, the convention has 198 contracting parties (197 countries plus the European Union), which represents almost universal membership. The next conference will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan in November 2024.
