World Bank predicts climate change could displace 86 million people in sub-Saharan Africa by 2050

Climate change-related displacement is not a hypothetical future – it is a current reality," said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grande. The World Meteorological Organization reported that the increase in the frequency and severity of natural disasters has contributed to the increase in displacement due to disasters.  People who have been forced to leave their communities due to flash floods are often unable to return home, even after the waters recede. Floods often wash away houses and destroy farmland. Nomadic pastoralists and their livestock are also increasingly on the move due to recurring droughts or floods. At the community level, different groups are shown to be prone to different types of vulnerability: women, children, the elderly and people with disabilities are often more vulnerable and at higher risk.
